With almost 60 years of production, Porsche continues to awe the public with remarkable class and style and incredible features. It is certainly a car that you have to fork over some money for, but every model is worth every little penny.
The official date of birth for the Porsche is June 8, 1948 with the two-seat 356. The 356 was built with a 1.1 liter centre engine, 40 hp and weighed just 65 kg. Following the creation of the first Porsche, the following 50 356/2’s were hand-built in Austria. At that time, Ferry Porsche made the mistake of thinking it would be impossible to sell more than 500 cars. Just six years later on March 15, 1954 the 5,000th car left the factory.
After 17 years of production, the last Porsche 356 left the production line in April of 1965. In total, there were 81,003 356’s built and the public was fascinated by them because of the aerodynamic design and speeds of up to 140 mph.
It wasn’t until 1953 that the famous Porsche badge was displayed on all of the vehicles finally giving it an identity. Therefore, there were five years of 356’s that were built without an identity of the Porsche badge. From then on, every car that has left the production line has been tagged with the badge of luxury.
In 1959 Porsche began developing their newest model called the 901. Butzi Porsche designed the new generation 901 on September 12, 1963. After five years of development and planning, the 901(introduced as 911 to the public) was finally available to the public to purchase in August of 1964.
In the late fall of 1964, French car producer Peugeot objected the name 901 saying that it was already patented. Because of this, Porsche immediately changed the model to 911 and began selling it to the German and international markets for a price of DM 21,900.
In 1962, the Carrera Abarth was born bringing rise to the Spyders generation for Porsche. The Carrera Abarth was built with a body reminiscent of the 356 design, but was much racier. With the combination of the Spyders and the 911, Porsche cars were flying high during the racing era.
For a while during the mid-90’s there were rumors of Porsche merging with Daimler-Benz to enhance the company. It was at this time that Porsche gained new life with the type 993 and the Boxster. Because of this, Porsche today remains as the only independent manufacturer of sports cars left. This is truly a sign of character and class that Porsche has displayed over the last 59 years and counting. And with the continuous production of high quality vehicles, there is no sign of Porsche letting up.
